We are open and honest with our customers, and have provided some information on the origin of our ingredients below.


Welcome to Colchester Hog Roasts

The hogs used in our famous hog roasts all come from the Blythburgh free range herd, which live in the sandy soil of the Suffolk coast. These slow-growing pigs are kept in large fields that allow them to display natural behaviours and to play with their peers. As a result they enjoy a high standard of welfare and grow at a slower rate. This gives the meat an exceptional succulence and rich flavour that is not found in intensively produced pork. Jimmy Butler, head farmer of the Blythburgh herd, has recently been voted Pig Farmer of the Year by Farmers Weekly.

The lambs used in our lamb roasts are native-bred and come from the Essex salt marshes. Ewes are stocked at a low rate of 3 per acre, and the lambs graze on natural sea grasses and samphire until the time of butchering, which imparts a unique flavour on the meat. The lambs are grass-fed free range and are produced with the welfare of the animals as a top priority. The meat has a richer and sweeter flavour which is prized on the continent (90% of British salt marsh lamb is exported to France).

Our bread rolls and French baguettes are batch-made in local Essex bakeries. The bread is made without additives, and is allowed to ferment slowly before being baked in traditional ovens. This gives the bread a light, open texture and a crunchy crust. The bread used in your hog roast or barbeque will have been freshly baked that morning.

Our fruit and vegetables are sourced from local greengrocers. We use British-grown organic produce wherever possible. Only the most flavoursome varieties are used in our hog roasts and barbeques.

The Colchester Hog Roast Co. provide high quality hog roasts and barbeques throughout Essex, including Colchester, Mersea Island, Brightlingsea, Chelmsford, Heybridge, Coggeshall, Wivenhoe, Saffron Walden, Manningtree, Southend-On-Sea, Halstead, Maldon, Frinton, Harlow and Witham. We specialise in hog roasts, whole roast lambs, roast beef, roast chickens and roast turkeys. All of our meat is free range (and organic where possible). We pride ourselves on the quality of our ingredients and service.
